May 2005

Ask former Senator John Edwards (D-NC) about looking back and he would be sure to respond with bitter humor towards to the Kerry-Edwards Campaign. Why, you ask? It seems quite simple because he wants to look forward, look towards 2008. Ex-Senator Edwards is now in the process of separating himself from 2004, trying to pin all the blames on Senator Kerry (D-MA) as he works to persuade democrats and he is the choice for the future. Newsweek reports that in the coming weeks in will be hosting a retreat for old campaign supporters and donors to talk about his One America PAC and more importantly his hopes for 2008 Presidential bid.

“No group of Americans has more reason to fight privatization of Social Security than today’s young workers. The Republican proposals to cut benefits and add trillions of dollars to the debt mean that millions of young people will be forced to work into their 70s and pay higher income taxes for the rest of their lives.” - Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH)

“President Bush likes to say that young people have the most to gain under his plan, but the truth is that young people have the most to lose. Social Security will be there for today’s young people, unless the President gets his way.” - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

“The Republican plan would not help but would indeed hurt younger workers by cutting their retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, eventually by almost 50 percent.” - Rep Sandy Levin (D-MI)

On January 26th, nine young members of Congress wrote a letter to President Bush about why Social Security privatization would hurt young people.
No one in the administration responded.
President Bush can’t explain why his administration wants to cut the benefits of young Americans by 40 percent, while increasing the national debt over $5 trillion in the process.
But you have the power to make his administration respond. We’re going to send back the letter to the administration with student co-signers from across the country. Tell the President, “It matter to US!”
