President

Spencer Dixon

My name is Spencer Dixon and I am running for President of the GW College Democrats for the 2012-2013 academic year. I have served on the CD executive board for the past two years. Last year, I served as the Freshmen Rep for Foggy Bottom and this year I have served as the Political Affairs Director. In my role this year, I led a trip to the Hill to lobby for President Obama’s “American Jobs Act,” coordinated with other progressive student orgs on campus, and recruited and planned for both the student and professor debates we had. These experiences have allowed me to see first hand the amazing things the largest chapter of CDs in the country can do and the potential we have to do even more. If elected President, my number one priority in the fall will be to organize the masses of enthusiastic Democrats on campus to re-elect President Obama and do whatever we can to retake the majority in the House and maintain it in the Senate. Over the summer, I am working for OFA in Northern Virginia. I plan on using the contacts I make there to have a direct connection to the campaign in that state. I am not naive enough to think we alone will be the deciding factor in this election, but I do believe that we can make a real difference in Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, or wherever our buses will take us. In the spring, once the President has been sworn in again, I will engage the GW CDs in a fierce lobbying effort to make our voice heard in the policy-making of the new term. I believe, if you elect me as President, I can lead this organization to not only lead the campus in activism, but to have a substantial impact both in electoral and legislative politics. Thank you and I hope to earn your vote!

Vice President

Shiah Shahmohammadi

Hello GW CDs! I’m Shiah and I want to be your next CD Vice President. I currently serve as Communications Director and prior to that I was the Freshman Representative from the Mount Vernon Campus.

I can honestly say I found my place at GW in the College Democrats. Serving for the past two years has not only given me a great amount of organizational experience, but I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting and becoming close friends with members involved.

I will work hard in the 2012-2013 year to help reelect President Obama and promote the Democratic ideals we all believe in. In the fall, I want to send hundreds of College Democrats to knock on doors for Obama in Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, and anywhere else a bus can take us!

We all came to GW so that we can have an impact. If I’m elected the VP of College Democrats, I will ensure this organization provides you all with the most opportunities to make a difference.

Finance Director

Gordon Pera

My name is Gordon Pera, and I am running for Finance Director. This past year, I served in this position, and I am hoping to help keep the GW College Democrats the best-organized and most productive organization on campus, in this city, and in the nation.

With the changing nature of the Student Association financial process over the past couple of years and the technical nature of the position, I think it is in the best interest of the organization to have stability at the Finance Director position. That said, this year has also provided me with a great deal of experience in dealing with both the paperwork and people sides of the Finance Director position. This year has given me the knowledge and connections to help make next year even more successful than the last.

I have been extremely honored to work with the Executive Board of this organization over the past year, and I hope that you give me this terrific opportunity again for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Political Affairs

Omeed Firouzi

My name is Omeed Firouzi and I’m a freshman running for Political Affairs Director for the GW College Democrats. I’m running because I have both the experience needed and commitment required for the position. For one, in my short political career so far, I was the campaign manager for the successful reelection campaign of state Rep. Phyllis Mundy (D-Kingston, Pennsylvania), worked in Rep. Mundy’s district office, volunteered on President Obama’s 2008 campaign in Wilkes-Barre, and currently serve as President of GW for Obama-Biden 2012. I have experience in organizing volunteers, running political operations, and engaging others in the political process. Secondly, I have shown intense dedication to the CDs this year, participating as a debater in two of the three student debates (debates that the Political Affairs Director organizes), going on the Ohio trip in February, attending & participating in every event that featured a guest speaker, attending & participating in almost all general body meetings, and helping the organization in many other ways, including making calls for Earl Ray Tomblin and Max Skolnik. If elected Political Affairs Director, this experience and this commitment will prove useful in my work in this position. Having organized volunteers and ran a campaign before, I can easily organize rallies and petition campaigns, like Spencer has done this year. Having participated in the debates, I can effectively organize the student and professor debates next year. If given the opportunity to engage in these activities, I will do my best to serve enthusiastically as Political Affairs Director.

Communications

Rodericka Applewhaite

Hi! My name is Rodericka Applewhaite and I am running for Communications Chair for next year’s Executive Board. Joining College Dems as a freshman, I knew that I wanted to get involved and become an integral part of the community as soon as possible. To me, being a member means far more than showing up to meetings and events just to be noticed by the Executive Board; every event, speaker, and chance to volunteer for a campaign has truly lent itself as a learning experience. I used this opportunity to really get involved and understand the inner workings of local and national politics from the start of August (something that wasn’t much of a possibility growing up in a red state). Through Dems, I have grown as a Democrat and can see the lifelong relationships forming that will benefit me and hopefully others in the future. I am running for Communications Chair because I have seen the hard work that Shiah has put into the position over the year and believe that I can emulate that same effort and dedication in my own style. Also, I am a people person that excels in maintaining the relations needed to get members mobilized and excited for all of the events that we will have. I have the Graphic Arts skills necessary to make posters and advertisements that will attract as many people as possible to our events. I want to assert myself in the Executive Board in such a way that I keep a good, working relationship will my fellow elected or appointed officials in order to promote team synergy and evenly promote everyone’s events and initiatives that continue to make us the best and most efficient student organization on campus. Thanks

Tessa Bay

Hey, my name is Tessa and I am running for the communications position in College Democrats. I am a relatively new member, but throughout this one year I have really had a great opportunity to travel a lot with the College Democrats and spend a lot of time getting to know the organization and the people a lot better and it has been really awesome to be engaged with one of the most active student organizations on campus with such a notable cause. That being said I would love to be able to support the College Democrats even more by becoming more involved, which is why I will be running for the communications position. This is my first year at GW, but I do have plenty of hands on leadership experience from two years of student government. I am extremely dedicated to the democratic cause and very accountable as well as hard working. I know I could do a great job in this position and I hope I can count on your support!

Chase Hardin

Because I’m running for Communications Director, the temptation to make a West Wing reference is an all-consuming desire beyond the description of mere mortal words. How can I not reference CJ Craig, the President’s quick-witted Press Secretary? I’m engaged in a sordid love affair with her character and the clever, witty, communication she employs to aid the President. She is my idol. Throughout my academic career, I’ve prided myself on the same concise, efficient, and thorough communications; be it with my experience in theatre, debate, my time as a Senator in the GW Student Association, and hopefully, as Communications Director for the George Washington University College Democrats.

No work can be done well if not done passionately. The things that make me passionate about being a Democrat are too many to number, but among them is a devotion to compassion, to reason, and to common sense solutions based in logic before ideology. What always struck me about the College Democrats was the genuine work we accomplished– this isn’t child’s play. This is real, and we’re helping swing elections from West Virginia through Ohio. There is nothing in this world that I want more than to be a part of an organization that is changing the country. I want to help. And I want to help by doing what I do best – at the risk of sounding dramatic or maybe even childish, what I do best is communicate.

There is so much more to being a Communications Director than simple communication. At its core, however, this position comes down to the ability to be an effective messenger. What message isn’t my concern, but I hope you would choose me to be the one to deliver it.

My name is Chase Hardin. Vote for me as the College Democrats Communications Director. Thanks!

Membership Director

Corrine Gammon

Hi, my name is Corinne Gammon and I am a freshman from Pennsylvania. I’m running for membership director because I’ve been extremely involved in the College Democrats this past year and have had a blast and I really want to be a part of creating a similar experience for members next year. The campaign trips to West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio have been some of my favorite weekends since coming to college and all the miscellaneous burger trips, movies, and other canvassing and phone-banking adventures have been so much fun as well. It’s been awesome to be able to meet and bond with so many incredible people and that has encouraged me to run for a position on next year’s executive board. I think I’d make a great membership director because I love meeting new people and feel passionately about the organization and getting current members more involved and reaching out to next year’s freshman. I have so many ideas that I’d love to make a reality, like a College Dems trip to the zoo and a cupcake excursion through Georgetown, to name a few. I believe my dedication and commitment to and passion for the GW College Democrats this past year makes me the best candidate for the position of membership director and I’m beyond excited to possibly have the chance to make the organization even better next year!

Daniel Leimberg

I would like to serve as the College Democrats Membership Director because I feel like I can bring a lot of fun to the the organization for the 2012-2013 school year. The only way we are able to be an effective organization is if we work well as a cohesive group, and I feel like I can make that happen. There are so many great things we can do as a group and I look forward to implementing them. From bonding dinners, to movies in Georgetown, to our awesome yearly party I feel like I can come up with great events that our members will really enjoy. Serving on Board this year as assistant membership director has prepared me for this position and I am confident I can do a great job and make sure our membership has a great year! BAM!

Madeline O’Brien

My name is Madeline O’Brien, and I am running for Membership Director.

At GW, we are fortunate to have one of the country’s most politically active campuses. While the size of our College Democrats chapter is a testament to GW student’s passion for politics, the large size of the organization means that it is easy for members to fall through the cracks.

As membership director, I plan to propose new ways to not only improve our already impressive membership numbers, but also to encourage participation for the GW Democrats who are already dues paying members.

One suggestion that I plan to propose is the idea of incentive points. The idea of offering tickets to VIP events in exchange for phone banking and canvassing for Max Skolnik brought members who may have not otherwise participated into the office and allowed us to make over 2,000 phone calls for Max. Why not continue this pattern throughout the year and include events such as campaign trips and debates as grounds for incentive points? An incentive system, with rewards such as meeting VIP speakers or getting access to other special events, encourages members to keep up active involvement.

Another idea that I plan to propose as membership director is the idea of organizing activities open to select members based on grade or hometown. College Democrats is a large organization, and it can feel very easy to get lost in the shuffle. In the beginning, I remember feeling as though my participation may not have mattered among so many people. While I now know this to be untrue, I feel that organizing smaller events, such as a community service event targeted specifically at freshman, or a speaker targeted at democrats from a particular region, would make it possible to break events into smaller, manageable groups where members can feel more confortable getting involved.

Community Service

Francesca De Cristofaro

My name is Francesca De Cristofaro and I am a freshman from California. I will be a great Community Service Director of the GW College Democrats because of my experience and dedication to this organization. Although this is my first year at George Washington I have spent much of my free time working hard to promote democracy all over the country. I attended all the campaign trips, visiting West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania (where we are headed in just a few short weeks). This group of people, as well as the many activities that we do together, has inspired me to run for this position. I am confident that my experience and qualifications make me the strongest Community Service Director. Having worked for many years with Habitat for Humanity, I created strong foundations with that group and I continue to participate here in GW Habitat for Humanity. I plan on coordinating a College Democrat day dedicated to working on the current Habitat for Humanity site in Ivy City. I hope to continue the College Democrat blood drives on campus, as they have been a huge success this year and lots of fun too! Making PB&J sandwiches for the Veterans Day event was another incredible experience. I will continue my work with animal shelters and partner the College Dems with rescue centers to help find good homes for puppies and kittens. There is nothing better in the world than helping those who need it most and volunteering within your community in the name of Democracy. My passion for community service and my experience working with volunteer groups as well participating in community service events with the College Democrats makes me the best candidate for the position. So vote Francesca De Cristofaro, the most dedicated, experienced, and passionate Community Service Director.

Genevieve Lipinsky de Orlov

Community service is my passion and as an active member of the College Democrats, I want to further my involvement as Community Service Director. At home I volunteer as a first-aider on my local ambulance responding to medical emergencies throughout my town. Since 2006 I have traveled to Nicaragua five times with the organization Bridges to Community to build homes for the working poor and held the positions of secretary and president in the student-run group. During the summer at NYS’s maximum security women’s prison in Bedford Hills, I cared for children visiting their incarcerated mothers. Politically I am passionate about my democratic ideals, actively volunteering on congressional campaigns in my home district in New York and working with the CDs in Earl Ray Tomblin’s gubernatorial campaign in West Virginia and President Obama’s reelection campaign in Ohio.

As Community Service Director, I hope to coordinate exciting and meaningful events and to maximize participation by holding them at convenient times during the day and weekends. I will also work with GW community service organizations to advertise and participate in their events as well as help in their fundraising efforts with our large and prominent presence on campus. Within the DC community I would continue our work with organizations like Miriam’s Kitchen and Planned Parenthood and extend our outreach to other DC service organizations as well. As Community Service Director I want to work to make community service events a weekly activity for the CDs. If we have the power to change the outcome of elections, we certainly have the power to make great changes in our GW, DC, and global communities.

Peter Sacco

My name is Peter Sacco and I am running for the George Washington University College Democrat’s Community Service Director position for the 2012-2013 school year. I believe that I have the best qualifications to be the Community Service Director due to my past and current dedication to serving my community. In high school, I served as a religious education teacher at my church for three years, led the local town cleanup day for two years, and led a one thousand hour, two year Eagle Project aimed at protecting a local, endangered river. Here at GW, I am the current Community Service Director for Circle K International, a past Community Building Community, Freshman Day of Service, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service participant, a future Relay for Life walker, and a current candidate for the DC Commission for National and Community Service and Hunger and Homeless Coordinator for the GW Neighbors Project. I am also currently a Government Affairs Intern with the National Parks Conservation Association, Student Advocate for LIFT-DC, Project Leader for Greater DC Cares, and Coach for Playworks DC. Finally, I have to date performed more than 175 Volunteer Match registered service hours for the DC Community at 19 non-profits across the district, including the Anacostia Watershed Society, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Back On My Feet, Capital Area Foodbank, Charlie’s Place, DC Central Kitchen, Food for All, Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN), Kid Power, Little Sisters of the Poor, Martha’s Table, Miriam’s Kitchen, So Others Might Eat, the Washington Home, Thrive DC, and We Are Family. I look forward to working with the CD Executive Board to enhance community service opportunities for members through special events and regular hours at local non-profits, as well as through collaborations with other GW student organizations.

Deepika Srivastava

Hey, y’all! My name is Deepika Srivastava and I’m running for the position of Community Service Director for the upcoming academic year! Community service and outreach is and always has been something that is very close to my heart and I engage myself in it every chance I get. I’ve been teaching art and writing programming for a children’s hospital in New York since 2008 and volunteering throughout the city of New York wherever help is needed for as long as I can remember; at farmer’s markets, cancer fundraisers, charity walks, you name it. As an American progressive, the issues in our political sphere that resonate most strongly with me are those that relate to the micro-level needs of people: issues like health care reform, increasing social mobility, and, most of all, education reform. I hope to go into the nonprofit sector when I’m older.

On campus, most of the orgs I’m involved with are nonprofit organizations. I’m a founding member and fundraising chair of GWU’s To Write Love on Her Arms chapter, the first and only student org at GW devoted to suicide prevention and personal empowerment. I’m also involved with orgs like Invisible Children and STAND. Being a part of the College Dems community has done nothing but increase my desire to use both politics and my own resources to improve the lives of other people, and with the position of Community Service Director, I hope to take these values and my previous experiences to seek out awesome opportunities for us as an organization to help others. There is strength in numbers and we are the biggest (and best) student org on campus.

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support for progressive organizations across the country. We run campaigns for the Human Rights Campaign, USPIRG, and Environment America. This summer we will be in over 50 cities, working and lobbying to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.

Last summer our staff helped ban off-shore drilling to protect our coasts, repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and increase food safety standards to make school lunches safer- all while building valuable leadership skills.

Currently, we have paid positions open on our campaign staff in each of our locations. We require that interested candidates are hard workers and have excellent communication skills.

As a member of our staff, you will fundraise, build membership for our partner groups, and educate and activate citizens on pressing issues. You will also have the opportunity to organize press conferences and build coalitions with other non-profit organizations. While on staff, you gain knowledge of pressing concerns our country is facing, learn how to effectively generate public support, and obtain a firm understanding of the political process.

We will be holding information sessions and interviews at GW March 27th-29th at 10am, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm each day. Most sessions will be held at the Career Center, Conference Room 208. To apply, please visit www.jobsforgoodcauses.org or call 800-75-EARTH (753-2784).
