February 2007

The College Democrast are happy to welcome to campus Congressman Steven Israel.

Wednesday, February 28th
8:00 PM
MC 307

Mr. Israel is a GW Alumnus. He will discuss his work on Capitol Hill and the new Democratic majority. This event is co-sponsored with the Jewish Student Association and SAFI.

Congratulations to all CD endorsed candidates who won in this weeks elections.

Please remember to vote in the run-off election next Wednesday and Thursday.

The College Democrats are proud to endorse:

  • For SA President - Marc Abanto
  • For SA Executive Vice-President - Nick D’Addario

For more information on the elections, visit www.gwelection.com. Polls will be located at Ross Hall, the Marvin Center, Mount Vernon Pub, Duques, and the Law School and will be open from 9 am to 9 pm on election days.

The College Democrats have recieved a lot of press in the past fourty-eight hours.  From James Carville, to Senator Schumer, to a Valentine’s Day same sex rally.  Take a look at what we’ve been up to.  For a full list of articles, please visit our press page.

Succumbing to the pressure of GW’s united progressive community, the College Republicans have backed down from their planned attack on gay rights. Instead of the public demonstration they had hoped for, the CR’s hid in the Ivory Tower Common Room to eat their cake alone. This retreat is a major victory for GW’s united progressive groups.

The progressive community will still hold a demonstration today in support of gay equality. More details will be released soon.

***EVENT UPDATE:  The protest has been moved to infront of the Marvin Center due to weather.  Please contact for more information.***

The events planned for today on the Mount Vernon Campus are cancelled due to the weather.  We are still demonstrating on University Yard from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM today.  If further changes are warranted, you will be informed by email. You can also check www.gwcollegedemocrats.com for updates throughout the day.

“It is sad that the College Republicans have chosen to divert their attention to something this ridiculous.”As a country, we face a myriad of very serious problems: an un-winnable war in Iraq, 47 million uninsured Americans, growing income inequality, and a deadly addiction to foreign oil. Instead of focusing on constructive ways to solve our nation’s problems, the College Republicans have chosen to demean the lifestyles of gay Americans, across the country and at GW. Certainly the CR’s can do better!

“The College Democrats reject this silly protest for what it is: a meaningless waste of time designed solely to insult the gay community. The College Republicans should be ashamed of themselves! We believe gay Americans are as deserving of the pursuit of happiness as any American. We fully support equal rights for gays, and believe they should be offered the same privileges and opportunities of straight people. To the College Republicans we say, “Let them eat cake!”

Dear College Democrats Members,

Please take a moment to read through this letter to clarify tomorrow’s events.

As you know, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day - a day of love and compassion. Some members of the GW community are attempting to turn Valentine’s Day into a day of discrimination. The College Democrats, Allied in Pride, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Progressive Student Union, GW Democrats and GW College Libertarians have joined together to respond to these hateful acts.

We have two events planned for tomorrow:

Mount Vernon: In direct response to a homophobic, anti-love demonstration there will be a counter-protest at noon at the Mount Vernon Quad. We are asking that all students participating in the counter-protest take a piece of the wedding cake and throw it out in the garbage bags labeled ‘discrimination’ provided by our organizations. Help us throw out discrimination!
***If this event is cancelled due to inclement weather you will receive an e-mail notification by 11:30am.

University Yard: The organizations listed above will be celebrating loving unions and Valentine’s Day in University Yard at 1pm with cupcakes, candy, information and more! This event will be going on regardless of weather conditions or class cancellations.

Help us end bigotry and discrimination. Stand up for equality and love for all!

In solidarity,
The Executive Board of College Democrats

P.S. Please check www.gwcollegedemocrats.com or www.alliedinpride.org for continuous updates about tomorrow’s event.
