Democratic Senate leadership is in the center for the new Congress. After the loss of seats in both houses of Congress, Democrats chose Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada to be the sSenate Minority Leader.  Plans for future legislative action include improving the environment, and creating jobs. He is also determined to fight President Bush on the Social Secunty package. Reid has been in politics for many years, and always a Democrat, but one who favors taking the middle road. On NBC News Meet the Press he said, “I think there’s no question about it. You know, we don’t acomplish anything on the far right and the far left. Things are accomplished in the middle.” As for getting things acomplish he already has. On Jan. 6, he, along with other members of the Senate, announced that the debt the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee have almost erased the $4 million debt that had accrued from the last campaign season. He and the DSCC chairman, Sen. Chuck Schumer from New York are working hard to make sure that the Democrats will keep their 19 seats and gain more in the 2006 Congressional election.

The announcement that Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) would speak before the GW student body generated a spark on campus. Originally scheduled to speak in the amphitheater On the 3rd floor of the Mawin Center, the event overflowed and had to be moved to the Grand Ballroom. The 200-plus in attendance heard mcinich’s criticism of the Bush Administrations handling of Katrina, the events of September 11th, and the war in Iraq. While this was an event put on by the GW College Democrats, many GW College Republicans came out to listen to the Congressman as well and the crowd was treated to an open, honest discussion of issues confronting the country.
