Candidacy Statements for 2008-2009 Executive Board Elections

Official Candidate Statements

Below are the official candidacy statements for the 2008-2009 election of the College Democrats Executive Board.

The election will occur on Monday April 7th with the proceedings beginning promptly at 7PM in Funger Hall Room 108. However, candidates and supporters are encouraged to arrive by 6:30PM because in order to vote your status as a dues paid member of the College Democrats must be confirmed at the door. If you arrive after the election proceedings have begun or leave before they are completed you will still be allowed to vote but only for those positions for which you have seen every candidate speak. Only registered, dues-paying members who registered by 11PM on Friday, April 4 will be eligible to vote.

If you have questions, please e-mail them to GWCDElection@gmail.com.

PRESIDENT

Tanya Choudhury

It is time for us to build on experience. Next year is too important and presents an amazing opportunity for us to influence American politics. From Congressional races to state and local elections and of course the 2008 Presidential election, College Democrats can be a huge force in ensuring that Democrats are elected and Democratic voices are heard at all levels of government. This effort starts here at GW and building on all we accomplished this year; your vote is our next step. Serving you as President of this group is one of the most rewarding and most difficult jobs on campus. It takes an intricate understanding of GW's administration, student organizations of all types, College Democrats of America, and most importantly student life. This kind of understanding is years in the making and can only be gained through experience and the ability to listen. I am the only candidate who was first Freshmen Representative, then Events Director, and finally this year's President, and that makes a big difference. I know this group, and I have experienced success and also recognized places for improvement. Through it all, I have continuously learned and listened to you all. And under my leadership we have turned the College Democrats to not only one of the most active and successful groups on campus, but also one of the best College Democrats' chapters in the nation. In short, no one understands the intricacies of College Democrats or believes in the potential of this organization more than I do, and this is the key to making the CDs reach that potential in the 2008-2009 school year. My name is Tanya Choudhury, and I am asking you again to trust me to serve you as President.

Cory Struble

In the past year, we have witnessed an unparalleled turnout of college students to vote and volunteer in elections. Whether we're backing Barack or Hillary next Fall, the College Democrats must seize upon the excitement that this election has generated and play a critical role in electing the next President. Even though most GW students are already involved in politics to some extent - interning, campaiging, etc. - they are not necessarily involved in our party's organized presence on campus. I am running because I believe that our efforts are strongest when they are unified rather than scattered. We can't be content with just turning out our core membership - the next president of this group will require the passion to rally hundreds of students to sacrifice anything from a couple hours for phonebanking to a couple of weekends to knock on doors in some of the most tightly contested races in the country. I have experience organizing and motivating students to do just that. As Communications Director this year, I learned that we have to go beyond posters and e-mails if we want to convince people to coalesce around our cause. We've got to reach out to our members personally - which is precisely what I did when I organized the anti-war rally in September, that yielded over 300 students – the highest GW student turnout in recent history. Our voice on campus must dominate next year; when the Republicans bring the likes of Coulter or Rove, we've got to speak out and stand up, unified as an organization, in a powerful way. Finally, as President, I want to deepen our commitment to activism, use our resources in the nation's capitol more often, and move us to the forefront of shaping the Party's ideology rather than simply marching behind it.

VICE-PRESIDENT

Greta Twombly.

"Democrats take back the White House!" Those are the words I want to hear on the night of November 8th, 2008. Next year has the potential to be a monumental one for Democrats everywhere. For Democrats here at GW we too need to make it the best year ever and to achieve this goal, I am running for College Democrats Vice-President. Next year the College Democrats need to be the leading political voice on campus. We should be bringing in high-caliber speakers, hosting engaging events on a regular basis, and taking multiple campaign trips to ensure Democratic victories. As Vice-President I would work to ensure that all Directors are pursuing multiple projects to bring our members the best events possible. I'm a bit of an organizational nut and thrive on management (mock away). I would use these skills to facilitate better event planning and more follow-though on potential events. As Assistant Political Affairs Director this year I was in charge of assisting in all Political Affairs events such as the issue weeks and most notably I co-planned the Kentucky Campaign Invasion trip. In planning the trip I was responsible for securing transportation, compiling all administrative paperwork, and working closely with our President to finalize trip details. Throughout the year I have helped with community service events, membership events, and political events. I feel that I have gained a great deal of knowledge into what is and what is not a successful event. Next year should be filled with successful events that excite and engage our membership. Our priority must be increasing the quality of events, not just the quantity. This past year I have gained immense experience on E-Board and I hope to use it to make next year an amazing one for the GW College Democrats.

Amelia West.

We need to get this organization back on track. We need to get back to serving our members by getting their feedback, taking their advice and working to make their College Democrats experience as great as mine has been. We must work to re-instate the DC Federation. It is nonsense that the nation’s most politically active university does not have a voice at the national level. I have a strong network of friends and contacts in College Democrats chapters and federations nationwide. I will work tirelessly to ensure the Federation is fully operational when I graduate in May. A non-functioning DC Fed is as wrong as DC lacking a vote in Congress. We deserve representation! We must work with each other and our members; it is time we start working more closely with the GW administration. How many times do cool people speak on campus and our chapter hears about it afterwards? As the largest group on campus, the University should come to us when bringing such influential individuals to campus. With my work as the Asst. Events Director, I have effectively worked with the administration. The VP’s role this year largely involves scheduling space, liaising between the Political and Social Events Directors, and keeping the calendar of all events. As Asst. Events Director, my responsibilities were already keeping the calendar, scheduling space, and working with eboard! Lastly, I will be graduating next year, so I am not merely climbing the College Dems ladder. I am running for this position because I believe that we can unite to make this the greatest election year that the CDs have seen. I will work with whoever is elected. I am committed only to CDs. I am able to devote all of my time and energy to the College Dems, and I will.

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Matt Ingoglia.

My name is Matt Ingoglia, and I’m seeking the position of Communications Director. I’m running for this position because I’ve always loved speaking, be it a public presentation or a one-on-one conversation. In my first year here at GW, I’ve gotten to exercise both of these passions, gaining valuable experience and connections in the process. Ever since my first venture into the College Democrats as a participant in the 2008 Candidates Forum last fall, I’ve taken advantage of nearly every opportunity that’s come my way, including the campaign trip to Kentucky and helping to plan our amazing Super Tuesday party. Through these experiences, I’ve witnessed the crucial role that communication plays in creating a successful event. As Deputy Communications Director of Vishal Aswani’s successful SA Presidential campaign, I had a chance to work directly with our current Communications Director and hone my ability to craft a winning campaign message. As your Communications Director, I will put all of this vital experience to work, bringing groups together and working diligently to ensure a favorable media image for the organization. I’m confident in my ability to accomplish both these tasks, because I’ve done it several times already this year. I’ve always seen communication as the catalyst of action. An organization as large and complex as ours depends on able leadership in order to run smoothly and effectively. Given my extensive involvement in the College Democrats thus far, I am confident I can fill this role and provide you with an organization that articulates your interests and works efficiently. I ask for your vote for Communications Director so that I may deliver on these promises and work to maximize our ability to affect Democratic change in the year to come.

Michael Komo.

Hey, folks. I'm Michael Komo, and I'm running for Communications Director. I believe that I have the experience, leadership, and vision in order to meet the needs and responsibilities associated with being the Communications Director. I have excellent communications skills and am a very personable person. I have been an active member of the College Democrats throughout the entire year. I have been to just about every single meeting and event this year. I have also participated in numerous events. I protested against the War in Iraq in the March on Washington. I have gone to the CD-CR Debates, as well as participated in one myself. I debated immigration in the Freshmen CD-CR Debate. I have also participated in such events as Bowling for the White House, the Super Tuesday party, the 80's dance, fundraisers, and much more. I also have experience outside the College Democrats. I am a member of the Allied in Pride Executive Board and the Diversity Affairs Commission. This year, I have worked to obtain a GLBT Resource Center for GW and to get legislation passed to prevent future hate crimes and hate speech, as well as bring the GW community together under common goals. If elected, Communications Director will always be a number one priority for me. I have been a life-long Democrat and want to help further the goals of the Democratic Party through this position. I want to build upon the successes of the College Democrats this year and improve upon the shortcomings as well. As Communications Director, I will effectively communicate the needs of the College Democrats and make sure the message of the College Democrats is heard throughout the GW campus. That is why I am asking you to please vote for me, Michael Komo, for Communications Director. Thank you.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR

Fae Jencks.

In the words of one of my favorite political figures; "we are the change we've been waiting for." As a founding member and Deputy Director of GW's chapter of Students for Barack Obama, I have seen first-hand the impact that students can make on world of politics. As students at George Washington University, we have the unique opportunity of living among the leaders who make the policies that shape our world. I am running for the Political Affairs Directorship to ensure that our campus is active in electing a Democratic President this November. I have the experience of putting together campaign trips to seven different primary states, organizing phonebanks, and planning election night parties. The 2008 election is of the utmost importance to our organization of young Democrats. However our activism should and will not end there. I will work to bring a variety of speakers and organizations to campus that will engage students in the type of activism that is central to being a proud Democrat. The issues that our country faces are those that we must take a vested interest in as students and the future of America. We should work with organizations on campus to fight for environmental, social, and political change. I am running for Political Affairs Director to bring change to our campus and to the world. Vote for an idealist. Vote for Fae Jencks for Political Affairs Director.

James Jones.

With the Presidential Election just around corner, it’s important that the GW College Democrats are politically active next year. We need to capitalize on the momentum of this historic election by gaining the interests of new political on-lookers here on campus. I am a person who believes that an organization is only as great as it members. First, I would advocate for an ambitious campaign to recruit new members of color. As I have noticed over the year, our membership lacks active students of color, specifically African Americans and Latinos. I believe we can improve the diversity within our organization, especially when African Americans and Latinos are playing such a vital role in selecting the next president. In addition, I would organize a series of events titled "Framing the Issue." One of the weaknesses of the Democratic Party, that has beset our organization as well, is the fact that people don't know what we stand for. These forums would clarify our positions and respond to the conservative rhetoric. There is much more that unites us than divides us, and identifying our shared values will go a long way in making next year successful. Finally, this year, I was the main force behind events such as the "Lunch on the Hill with U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah" and a panel discussion about poverty featuring prominent GW professors. I would undoubtedly work just as hard next year to bring captivating speakers to campus who share our progressive views. There is a lot at stake during the next election and as College Democrats we can do our part to help the party and the country by participating in voter education and outreach, campaigning in competitive races, and just telling people who we are. As Political Affairs director I would be dedicated to this cause.

Tyler Somes.

My name is Tyler Somes, and I'm running for Political Affairs Director of the College Democrats. I currently serve on the Executive Board as the Freshman Representative. In that position I have gotten to know a lot of our members and learned the internal intricacies of the College Dems. Let's Turn Virginia Blue in 2008! Virginia will be a crucial swing state in the upcoming election, and as Political Affairs director I would propose that turning the state blue in '08 should be a primary goal of the GW College Dems. Helping to accomplish this will take two things: First, we should coordinate with all of the DC and Virginia area school to put together a massive coalition of student volunteers. Second, we should coordinate closely with the Democratic Party's campaign in Northern Virginia to dispatch our volunteer to the most strategically effective locations. Operational planning for this starts the day I take office. "Shoot the Shit" 2.0 I propose to expand the "Shoot the Shit" discussion to include multimedia features like clips from "The Daily Show", etc. I would also propose that our members take turns leading the discussion on a rotating volunteer basis, instead of the PA Director. Themed Weeks: This year, the Political Affairs committee hosted several themed weeks. Each week focused on a certain topic.

Michael Wear.

Next year, the Democratic primary will be over and our campus, the DC community and the United States will be confronted with a question: Should our country be led by a Democrat or a Republican? I believe that I am best equipped, prepared and able to head the Political Department for another year. I consider my year-and-a-half service on the CD e-board and 2-year involvement with the organization to be a testament to my capability to do so. The decision of what position to run for was easy. I was not interested in elevating my status or that the "logical progression" would be a "higher" capacity. I ran for Political Affairs Director because I believed I was uniquely qualified to execute the duties that position required. I went through the same process when deciding if I would run for a CD office for 2008-2009. This year I have changed many things about how the Political Affairs Department operates. I came up with and instituted "issue-weeks." I have led "shoot-the-shit," which despite the lighthearted name, are critical to our organization and our members finding a voice. No longer are the College Democrats considered the "speaker" group while another group is prominent for activism. I have planned and will execute on April 9 the premier political event of the semester for the College Democrats, which includes members of Congress and national leaders. While event planning of this nature was up to my discretion as an e-board member, it is now the responsibility of the Political department. My department planned and executed the Kentucky canvass trip that contributed to Steve Beshear's successful Gubernatorial campaign. Our organization is full of intelligent, active and wonderful members. I have done my best and will continue to do my best to promote a more open and transparent College Democrats that will involve more members. I am sure, if this race is contested, that my friends running will have great ideas and would surely do an adequate job. I am running for Political Director because I know this position. I am more prepared and better equipped for this position, as newly defined, than that which I served in this year. I am running because the first three months of next year are critical for our organization and especially for the Political department. The Director should be able to lead from the start and know what he or she wants to do and where he or she wants to take the department and the political operation of the organization. I humbly request that my fellow College Democrats allow me to continue the work I started. I thank you for your support.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Jessica Gordon.

The upcoming election this November will surely be a very important moment for the Democratic Party. No matter which candidate earns the nomination, be it Barack or Hillary, by electing a democrat in 2008, America will once again earn respect from the rest of the world. As soon as we begin to take on the Republican Party, Democrats can finally unite together to change the world. As a student at the most politically active school in the country, we are expected and ready to take an active role in the 2008 election. I am running for Membership Director for the 2008-2008 school year because I believe I have the experience to add to the College Democrats’ already active membership. As we look to elect a new Membership Director, we must take into consideration both experience and passion. As the Get Out The Vote/Volunteer Coordinator for Students for Barack Obama, I have organized GW students to participate in campaign trips to seven different states. As a high school democrat, I organized both large events and small. With the enthusiasm of George Washington University Democrats, I expect to plan events that are lots of fun for lots of people. The enthusiasm of my fellow freshman in the organization was unparalleled, but I want that enthusiasm to be felt across the board. By recruiting across campus and through other organizations I plan to increase activism within the organization and involve the upperclassmen who have grown less involved as their lives have become busier. I will make sure that next year, our events will draw in every member of the College Democrats here at GW. We will show the College Republicans that our organization is a force to be reckoned with!

Rob Maxim.

From my first few experiences with the GW College Democrats, I have felt the positive influence of a good Membership Director. After a meeting in the early fall, Peter Weiss, the incumbent Membership Director, brought a group of new freshmen, myself included, to his residence hall and watched a CNN debate with us. The impression that one small act gave me, that the College Democrats were a group of welcoming, friendly people with a keen aptitude for our nation’s political climate, was one of the key factors that kept me coming back. As Membership Director, I hope to continue the trend that Peter has set this year. As a social spokesman of the organization, I would promote two goals: encourage new members to join and participate in the organization and in politics, and foster a social environment that would keep older members active. For the newer members I would use two tactics. For some (such as myself) down-to-earth, “grassroots” campaigning events such as tabling and visibility are ideal, as they are easy to participate in and work well to get oneself involved. For others, social events that cater around the freshman scene (i.e. Thurston Hall) such as dance parties and watch parties are more appealing. For older members, I’d organize off-campus social events. I recognize that for many juniors and seniors (and likely even some sophomores) a Thurston Hall dance party is not their idea of a thrilling time. Whether it be a night at Hawk and Dove, or a day-trip to a fun DC spot that the tourists miss, I will organize several events that will appeal to the broad membership of the College Democrats. Finally, and most importantly, I will continue to act as a beacon of friendliness to new and established members alike. By ensuring that I get the little gestures right, helping out some new members in starting a project, acting as a contact point for older members, or simply hosting some freshmen to watch a debate, I will be a friendly a enthusiastic social connection for the members of the GW College Democrats.

COMMUNITY SERVICE DIRECTOR

Nico Brancolini.

What’s the biggest difference between the College Democrats and the College Republicans? That we have hearts and I don’t just mean that literally. Central to the core values of the Democratic Party, and dare I say liberalism, is a sense to help out, to serve a higher purpose in the lives of others. For this reason community service is integral to the College Democrats very existence. Instead of wasting time and resources on demagogic speakers we actually make an effort to do some good in the DC community. Thankfully this year such wonderful work has been done with the soup kitchens, Habitat for Humanity, and the upcoming Senior Citizens prom among others. Whoever is elected to this position next year has a responsibility to continue this wonderful work and use these foundations to expand our work in the area. In High School I was able to do just that. Through my school’s established Habitat chapter, where I served two years as President, I was able to expand on existing foundation each year; increasing membership and revenues. Similarly with College Democrats, I’d hope to increase participation in these projects and up the total number of events we do. Fundraising, always central, was one of my greatest talents in high school community service and I have a number of ideas for raising money. DC is just another untapped resource. Finally, though I hate to say it, it is good for the publicity of College Democrats to have high profile successful community events. It raises our clout on campus, our stock with the administration (positive press for the school), which may even result in better funds from the degenerate SA. If elected I know that I will succeed in all these areas for College Democrats and the greater DC community.

Rebekah Medley.

Hi, My name is Rebekah Medley and I am running for Community Service Director for the George Washington University College Democrats. I am seeking the office of Community Service Director because I have always had a passion and devotion to serving those around me in whatever capacity necessary. As a rising sophomore, I feel that I have already exhibited the qualities essential for not only fulfilling the duties of this office, but for strengthening the role of service within the College Dems. I have worked closely this year with the events committee on planning events such as the Super Tuesday party, organizing guest speakers, and everything in between. I have also been heavily involved in Community Service both within the College Democrats, and elsewhere. This year alone I participated in many service events such as the MLK day of service and Habitat for Humanity throughout the year. In addition, I have already had experience planning community service events for College Dems. During the holiday season I personally organized and raised money for a program in which the College Democrats bought gifts for less fortunate families. I believe Community Service can be a common thread that brings us together within this club and beyond the walls of this University. My hope is that we can all use community service as a driving force, within the scope of our political organization to truly make a difference in the lives of others. I believe as your leader in this capacity, that I can work within the Executive Board to make our organization even more outstanding. That is why I am respectfully asking you to elect me, Rebekah Medley, as your next Community Service Director for The George Washington University College Democrats. Thanks you for your time and consideration.

Kelly Zentgraf.

My name is Kelly Zentgraf, and I am applying for the position of the College Democrats Community Service Director for the 2008-2009 academic year. I am a rising sophomore and psychology major in the Columbian School who is interested in creating and promoting community service events in this organization. I have been an active member of the College Democrats throughout my freshman year. I have participated in several excellent community service projects through this organization, including work with Capital Area Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity. I have also just finished pledging Alpha Phi Omega, a coed community service fraternity on campus. Involvement in both of these organizations has lent me an insight into many of the outstanding non-profit organizations and charities in Washington, D.C., as well as an understanding of how vital community service is to our city. Because College Democrats is the largest progressive group on campus, we have a great base of committed and politically active students from whom to draw great community service ideas. If elected, I will work with our members to choose those service projects that best reflect the social activism inherent to the College Democrats.

FINANCE DIRECTOR

Evan Doran.

My name is Evan Doran and for the 2008-2009 academic year, it would be my honor to be the Finance Director for the GW College Democrats. I have just recently completed a finance course, but beyond that, finance is a topic in which I have much interest. With my experience using budgeting techniques for a state senate campaign in 2006 to my skill with Microsoft Excel, I believe I can offer an organized and efficient approach to the position. I have been a dedicated member of the GW CD's event committee for the last year, fostering relationships with a great group of Dems! As someone who knows what planning takes, I can use that experience to make sure events and other expenditures get what they need while also maintaining an orderly way of distribution. I would also work very closely with the Fundraising Director to keep the Dems funds growing so we can continually create exciting events and programming. As part of the job duties, the Finance Director must maintain close contact with the SA and SAC, both of which I have experience dealing with. Maintaining positive and interactive relations with members of the SA and SAC is a key part of all GW CD's E-board responsibilities, but the Finance Director is also responsible for daily upkeep and must develop a working relationship with both orgs as well. My time as Assistant Campaign Manager for the successful SA presidential campaign of Vishal Aswani has granted my valuable experience, but also key contacts who I can continue to work with. I believe that with my partially obsessive organizational skill, my experience in the College Dems and my relations with the SA and SAC make me the best candidate for the position of Finance Director. Vote for Evan!

Dan Kinney.

Hi, my name is Dan Kinney and I’m running for Finance Director of the GW College Democrats. I’ve been an active member of the College Dems since their first meeting, and I would love to take on a more active role on the e-board! I feel like I would be a good fit as Finance Director for several reasons. I spent an entire year working in the finance department for Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar’s successful campaign. I dealt with budgeting campaign materials, organizing our financial paperwork, and helping fundraise. As finance director there are many ways I would like to improve our standing. The College Republicans have outraised us over the last couple of years, and I would definitely like to put us over the top. One thing that I would like to establish, working with the fundraising director, is an organized network of donors. I would like to make a concrete list of past, present, and potential donors categorized by their contribution amount. The most important part of my platform is to try and create a finance and fundraising subcommittee. The committee would work on both finding more places and venues to hold mini-fundraisers (because late night Thurstonites love nothing more than a grilled cheese sandwich) and on determining whether or not they are successful and how to make them better. The subcommittee would also work on signing up new members are each event as well, constantly increasing our membership. Hopefully this would increase both our budget and our level of support. From schmoozing with Terry McAuliffe to making late night Wendy’s runs in Louisville, Kentucky, I’ve enjoyed every moment of my first year on the College Dems, and I would be honored to take on the position of Fundraising Director. Thanks guys!

Molly MacDonald.

I'm Molly MacDonald and I'd love for you to consider reelecting me Financial Director for the College Democrats. Over the last year, I have gained practical experience with budget creating, EAFs, and the other numerous miscellaneous duties of the Finance Director. If reelected, I would continue processing all this paperwork in a timely manner, as well as talking to the SA Finance Committee over the summer to make sure that the "allocation debacle" of this year will not be
repeated. I have also had similar experience working as the Business Manager of IAS's WAMUNC for the last two years. While this may be a bit out of my official duties, I would also like to help the board plan and implant events that would educate members about the economy
and the upcoming economic downturn, and the different parties various ideas to combat it. A wise friend once reminded me that "I am a Democrat first, and a Hillary/Obama supporter second". I hope to help unite our members behind our candidate and doing whatever is necessary
to make sure the GWCDs are active in assisting the Democrats take back the White House in 2008! Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Jonathan Schutrum.

I’m Jonathan Schutrum, declaring my candidacy for the position of College Democrats Finance Director. Throughout the year I have seen the College Democrats accomplish a great deal and am proud to be a part of the organization in this crucial election year. As the year moves on, there will be tremendous opportunities for us to make an impact on campus and beyond. To make the largest possible impact, we will need to be in a strong financial position. I was once told that Republicans study the financial pages of the newspaper and Democrats put them in the bottom of the birdcage. Well, I think that we can beat them at their own game! An economics student, I have a solid knowledge of financial practices and have had extensive experience in handling accounts. I believe that with an innovative investment strategy and a forward-looking approach, we can be sure that our College Democrats have the financial support to achieve all of our goals. It’s especially important to see that we have the means to achieve even more in the future. That is why one of my main objectives for the finance committee would be to create a long-term growth fund. If we dedicate a small amount of money to savings, in the future we will realize huge gains. The CD’s is a great organization and with careful planning and bold leadership we can move even further ahead. I am the one who can provide this future-oriented leadership for the Finance Committee in the year ahead. I believe that, as John F. Kennedy said “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future”. I am running for Finance Director to be sure that we never stop thinking about tomorrow.

Jessica Soroka.

My name is Jessica Soroka and I am running for Finance Director of the College Democrats for the upcoming year. I am a sophomore and have been an active and enthusiastic member of the College Democrats for the past two years. I have been a member of the Freshman Council and am currently part of the Political Affairs Committee. I am running for the position of Finance Director because I have the necessary skills and experience for the job. This past summer, I interned with a political fundraising firm that raises money for progressive Democratic candidates. My duties included preparing budgets for fundraising events and submitting the budgets to my supervisors. In addition to this experience, I currently serve as the Treasurer for GWUnited, the DC United fan club at GW. I also worked with the Student Association and the Student Activities Center this past semester and gained valuable knowledge handling EAFs – Expenditure Approval Forms. These forms are required for every event we host, and working with them is a vital part of being Finance Director. In addition to these experiences, I am an extremely organized person. College Democrats is the largest student organization on campus, and being in charge of accounting for this group requires a great deal of precision and planning. I am absolutely ready for the challenge of being Finance Director for the College Dems. For the past several years, the SA has given College Democrats less money than they have given College Republicans. This is not okay with me. If elected, I will work my hardest to get our fair share of the allotted SA money. Overall, I believe my experience and personal attributes make me the best and most dedicated candidate for the position of Finance Director for the GW College Democrats. Thank you!

Troy Timmer.

I’m Troy Timmer and I’m running for the position of Finance Director. I have been with the GW College Democrats for 3 years now and have served as both Assistant Political Affairs and Political Affairs Director. This past year, however, I was not able to serve on the Executive Board as I studied abroad in Paris. Returning to campus this past semester, I realized how much I missed being involved with the organization. Looking towards the future, next year will be especially exciting as we embark upon the 2008 election season. It will be vital that the organization has the necessary funding and a proper budget in order to ensure our success next year. I believe that I am especially qualified for the position of Finance Director in that I will be a Senior in the School of Business concentrating in Finance. I have been a finance intern for Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner and last summer I worked at a major stock exchange as an accounting intern. In addition to my overall financial experience, I also understand the finances of the College Democrats firsthand. As Assistant Political Affairs and Political Affairs Director, I helped organize several campaign trips to Virginia and Pennsylvania. I also understand the costs required to bring in the best speakers and put together top rate programming. I believe that I am the candidate that will be the most capable in ensuring our organization’s financial success. This will be an integral part of the organization if we want the GW College Democrats to remain as one of the best chapters in the country.
